Folks,
Clarity of thought and a well thought-out decision will lead you to places (read "Successful Career"). Do u want to know what are the essential ingredients for a successful job shift...
Normally, when you start hunting for a change in job you tend to keep the options open, but as you start getting some offers it becomes critical to narrow down your options to the ones that will further your career.
There are certain important aspects that you may need to consider while taking such an important decision:
1) Job Profile:
Here, the question to be asked is - What exactly would you be doing?
This needs to be carefully analysed, as you may not get the complete information. The information that you get maybe patchy or at times more generic. Be clear to understand what your role will be so that tomorrow there are no regrets. And don't forget to check whether it is a line function or a support role, as this will also determine the growth path to some extent.
2) Career Growth:
The question to be asked is - Where exactly you fit into the organisation?
It is very important to know that how fast can u grow with that profile, in other words, will u be stuck with that role or is there any other opportunities for growth. How flat is the structure of the organisation? and what business cycle is it in? are some of the other important questions that you need to get answers for before you join the bandwagon. The key is to look for Flat structures and for companies in growth phase so can you can grow with them.
3) Brand Recognition:
The question to be asked is - How the market values your organisation?
Don't forget to check what the brand means to the people u know. If the organisation is very valued because of their market leadership, then it might be difficult to move out as u have to move out of "The Market Leader" to a lesser brand. So, think about the time frame u want to be a part of this organisation before u decide. And, when u decide, do it in consonance with Point 2. Besides, the important aspect is that using the brand name, how easy will it be to get a job in case u plan to change your job down the line.
4) (The last but not the least) Pay Package:
The question to be asked is - Show me the money?
See it is important, but if u get the best deal after u had evaluated the first 3 points, then u can compromise a little bit on the pay side. Keep in mind that if your profile is good with excellent growth prospects, then your pay package will improve with bonuses and promotions. The key is that in case u are joining a Start-up company or a Sunrise industry, ensure that the pay package includes the Risk Premium component as well.
To conclude, the bottom-line is that u really need to get a right balance of job satisfaction, personal recognition and money, to keep u motivated. So, the most important things to be kept in mind are that u should take the job which u like to do, u should have the passion to succeed and the drive to meet your ambitions for career growth. So, at the end of the day when u go home, u should feel happy that u have done something that day....apart from the routine stuff.
Signing off...for now...with best wishes straight from my heart.
Cheers,
Prince
